Human Remains Found Near Tucson, But Authorities Say No Known Link to Nancy Guthrie Case

Human remains discovered in a desert area southwest of Tucson have drawn fresh attention to the months-long search for missing 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, but authorities say there is currently no indication that the discovery is connected to her disappearance.

The remains were found near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard, roughly 15 miles from Guthrie’s home in the Catalina Foothills, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. Investigators said the remains appear to have been at the location for an extended period.

That detail is significant because Guthrie has been missing since early February and investigators believe she was taken from her home. But proximity alone does not establish a connection, and the sheriff’s department has so far found no evidence tying the remains to the case.

The discovery comes as the investigation enters its seventh month with no public identification of a suspect and no confirmed location for Guthrie.

What authorities are saying about the remains

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the desert location after the remains were discovered. Investigators were seen moving through the hilly, cactus-covered terrain near a residential area off Ajo Way.

The sheriff’s department has not publicly disclosed who discovered the remains or exactly when they were reported. Officials have also declined to provide details about why investigators currently believe the remains are unrelated to Guthrie’s disappearance.

Authorities’ wording leaves room for the investigation to continue, but the department’s present assessment is that there is no indication of a connection “at this time.”

That distinction matters. Finding unidentified human remains in the same broad region as a high-profile missing-person case does not, by itself, establish that the remains belong to the missing person. Identification normally requires forensic examination and comparison with available records or DNA.

The latest discovery is also not the first time apparent human remains found in the Tucson desert have generated speculation about Guthrie’s whereabouts.

In May, a bone discovered by a person searching for Guthrie was examined and believed to be about 750 years old. Researchers said it was likely associated with the ancient Hohokam people rather than a recent crime.

Nancy Guthrie has been missing since February

Guthrie was last seen at her Tucson-area home on January 31. She was reported missing on February 1 after failing to attend a church service as expected.

Investigators have treated the disappearance as a suspected kidnapping. Surveillance footage from her home showed a masked, armed man approaching the property and tampering with a doorbell camera around the time Guthrie disappeared.

The case has received national attention because Guthrie is the mother of Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of NBC’s Today.

The investigation has involved the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI. Authorities have examined surveillance footage, physical evidence and DNA while pursuing thousands of tips.

In February, Guthrie’s family announced a $1 million reward for information leading to her recovery. Combined with an FBI reward, the total potential reward reached $1.2 million.

Despite that effort, Guthrie has not been found.

Ransom notes added another layer to the investigation

The case took another turn this summer when authorities released the contents of two ransom notes that had emerged after Guthrie disappeared.

The sheriff’s department said the decision to release the notes was intended partly to determine whether members of the public might recognize distinctive language or phrasing in them. Investigators have not publicly established who wrote the notes or whether the same person authored both.

One of the notes reportedly claimed that Guthrie had died, although authorities have not publicly confirmed that claim as fact.

That uncertainty remains central to the investigation. The latest discovery of remains could have provided a potentially significant lead if investigators had found evidence connecting it to Guthrie. At present, however, officials say they have not.

Why the latest discovery does not change the case — yet

The distance between the remains and Guthrie’s home may appear relatively small on a map, but the desert landscape around Tucson covers a large and varied area. Investigators must establish the identity, approximate age and circumstances surrounding the death before determining whether any connection exists.

For now, those questions remain unanswered publicly.

The sheriff’s department has continued to describe the Guthrie investigation as active. Six months after her disappearance, Sheriff Chris Nanos said a task force involving his department and the FBI remained committed to finding her and providing answers to her family.

The discovery also highlights a recurring difficulty in the case: numerous tips and searches have generated attention without producing a confirmed breakthrough. Earlier searches prompted by an anonymous tip even extended across the U.S.-Mexico border, but did not locate Guthrie.

What happens next

The immediate priority for investigators will be determining the identity and circumstances surrounding the remains. If forensic testing establishes that they belong to someone who disappeared recently, authorities could then examine whether any evidence links that death to Guthrie’s case.

Until then, the sheriff’s department’s position is clear: the remains are not currently considered connected to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.

For Guthrie’s family, however, the central question remains unresolved — where Nancy is and what happened to her after she disappeared from her home.

Savannah Guthrie and her family continue to seek information that could lead investigators to her mother. The case remains open, and authorities continue to ask the public to provide credible information rather than draw conclusions from unverified discoveries.
