Swatantra Bhardwaj arrested: Delhi Police have arrested social-media influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj in connection with an alleged assault on the father of student activist Nishu Azad during a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. A Delhi court on Saturday remanded Bhardwaj to one day of police custody, marking a major development in a case that returned to the spotlight after a viral podcast clip allegedly showed him speaking about the incident.
The arrest came a day after Delhi Police detained Bhardwaj in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, following a protest by members and supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) outside the Parliament Street police station. The protesters had demanded immediate action against him over the alleged attack.
Swatantra Bhardwaj arrested after Bulandshahr detention
According to police sources cited by news reports, Bhardwaj was traced to Bulandshahr after Delhi Police teams followed leads about his whereabouts. He was reportedly found in the area after leaving another location on a motorcycle, with police subsequently detaining him and bringing him back to Delhi.
His detention followed an intense day of developments in Delhi. CJP representatives, supporters and political figures gathered outside the Parliament Street police station and pressed authorities to take action in the alleged assault case. Police reportedly assured protesters that action would be taken against Bhardwaj within 72 hours.
Bhardwaj was later formally arrested and produced before a Delhi court. The court ordered one day of police custody, allowing investigators to question him further as the case develops.
What is the Jantar Mantar assault case?
The case concerns an alleged assault involving Sanjay Kumar, the father of student activist Nishu Azad. Reports place the incident during a CJP protest at Jantar Mantar, with news reports differing on the precise date, citing June 23 and July 20 in accounts of the wider controversy.
Bhardwaj and another accused, identified as Suraj Kumar, had previously been detained and questioned at the protest site, according to Delhi Police. Police said notices were subsequently served and indicated that a chargesheet would be filed.
The matter took a dramatic turn after a video from a podcast/interview circulated widely on social media. In the clip, Bhardwaj allegedly described attacking Kumar and claimed that he had “cracked” his skull. Reports also said he claimed the victim required numerous stitches and suggested that political connections had helped him avoid arrest.
Those claims became a major source of public outrage and prompted renewed demands for his arrest.
Bhardwaj says he acted in self-defence
Bhardwaj has offered a different account of the confrontation. According to reports, he has claimed that he acted in self-defence, saying he was surrounded by a group of people and feared for his safety.
The self-defence claim is now part of the competing versions of what happened at the protest. Investigators will have to establish the sequence of events and determine whether the available evidence supports the allegations against him.
There is also a dispute over the extent of Sanjay Kumar’s injuries. While Bhardwaj’s comments reportedly described a serious head injury requiring many stitches, Delhi Police said earlier medical findings did not support the claim of a skull fracture. Police said the injury was considered simple in nature and was attributed to a kada, or metal bracelet, rather than a weapon.
Police add SC/ST Act provisions and POCSO case
The legal case has also expanded beyond the original assault allegations.
Delhi Police have added provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and criminal-intimidation provisions, according to reports. A separate FIR has also been reported under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act) following allegations connected to the minor protester and online threats.
The POCSO-related development comes amid allegations that Nishu Azad faced abusive messages and rape threats following the controversy. Her supporters have demanded that authorities investigate those allegations as well.
The addition of these provisions could significantly widen the scope of the investigation, although the allegations remain subject to the legal process.
Chirag Paswan distances himself from Bhardwaj
Another political angle emerged after Bhardwaj allegedly invoked the name of Union minister Chirag Paswan while discussing the controversy.
Paswan and his party have since distanced themselves from Bhardwaj’s claims. The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) filed a complaint alleging that Bhardwaj had falsely used Paswan’s name in connection with the assault controversy
The development added another layer to the controversy, particularly because Bhardwaj’s alleged remarks about political influence had become one of the central talking points following the viral podcast.
Delhi Police have separately rejected allegations of political interference in their handling of the original assault investigation. Police said the earlier investigation had been conducted according to legal procedure and disputed claims that political pressure had prevented action.
