Yash’s much-awaited Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups has cleared a key hurdle ahead of its theatrical release, receiving an ‘A’ certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The certification also puts a firm number on the film’s unusually long runtime: the Kannada version runs for 194.12 minutes, or roughly 3 hours and 14 minutes.
The development comes less than two weeks before the film is scheduled to arrive worldwide on August 26, 2026. After multiple changes to its release plans, the Geetu Mohandas-directed gangster drama is now entering the final stretch of its promotional campaign.
The certification is significant not only because it clears the film for release, but also because it reinforces the mature tone that has surrounded Toxic throughout its marketing. The film has been presented as a violent, morally complicated gangster story rather than a conventional action spectacle.
Why the ‘A’ certificate matters
An ‘A’ certificate means the film is intended for adult audiences only. That classification fits the world shown in the promotional material, which has featured intense violence, crime, betrayal and darker themes.
The CBFC certification details also reveal a runtime of 194.12 minutes. That makes Toxic considerably longer than the average mainstream theatrical release and gives Mohandas a substantial canvas for the story she has constructed around Yash’s character.
The certification was reportedly issued through the board’s Bengaluru regional office.
The film’s official synopsis describes a gangster caught between loyalty, morality and the search for redemption in Goa, where violence and jealousy shape the lives of its characters. That description points toward a story driven as much by relationships and personal choices as by action.
A gangster story rooted in Goa’s unusual history
One of the more distinctive elements of Toxic is its setting.
Rather than placing the gangster drama in a familiar contemporary metropolitan environment, the film uses Goa during the period when India had become independent but Goa remained under Portuguese rule. Yash has described the story as a father-and-son revenge saga set after India’s independence, when Goa had not yet joined the Indian Union.
That historical backdrop gives the fictional crime story a specific political and social setting.
Goa was liberated from Portuguese rule on December 19, 1961, 14 years after India became independent. The Government of Goa records the end of Portuguese colonial rule and Goa’s integration into the Indian Union on that date.
For Toxic, that period provides a backdrop in which the film can explore power, crime and family against a society undergoing major political change. Earlier reports about the film have indicated that its story stretches across several decades, from the 1940s into the 1970s.
Yash returns with a very different world after KGF
For Yash, Toxic represents his first major lead release following the success of KGF: Chapter 2 in 2022. The gap has contributed heavily to anticipation around the project.
The film is directed by Geetu Mohandas, whose previous work has largely been associated with character-driven storytelling. Her collaboration with Yash therefore places the actor in a world that combines large-scale action with a darker dramatic framework.
The ensemble includes Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria and Rukmini Vasanth, alongside several other actors. Rajeev Ravi serves as cinematographer, while Ravi Basrur is among the composers associated with the project.
The recently released trailer has added another layer to the film’s mystery. It presents Yash in an intense gangster avatar and hints at conflict within the family, including a father-son relationship that appears central to the story.
The long road to August 26
The film’s journey to theatres has been anything but straightforward.
Toxic was originally scheduled for an earlier release before being moved several times. The makers had subsequently announced June 4, 2026, as a release date, but that plan was also abandoned before the current August 26 date was confirmed.
The repeated delays fuelled speculation about the project, but Yash recently rejected reports that the film had been shelved. He said the production involved a major commitment and described the project as the result of sustained work by the cast and crew.
That makes the CBFC clearance particularly important. With certification now in place and the release date officially locked, the focus can shift from production uncertainty to audience reception.
Nayanthara highlights Yash’s commitment
At the film’s recent promotional events, Nayanthara also spoke about Yash’s involvement in the project.
She described him as an exceptionally hardworking actor and said he had devoted four and a half years to the film. Her comments underline the scale of the commitment behind a movie that has taken years to reach theatres.
The film is also being positioned as a pan-Indian release rather than a project limited to one regional market. Yash has stressed that he sees Toxic as an Indian film intended to cross language and industry boundaries.
