The Tata Punch EV and Tata Tiago EV now occupy overlapping territory in Tata Motors’ electric-car line-up, but they target noticeably different buyers. The new Punch EV starts at ₹9.69 lakh ex-showroom, while the Tiago EV remains the more affordable entry point, starting at ₹6.99 lakh.
The price gap is significant, but the Punch EV brings larger battery packs, substantially more claimed range and the higher positioning of a sub-compact SUV. For buyers deciding between the two, the key question is whether those additional capabilities justify spending more.
Tata Punch EV vs Tiago EV: Price
Tata’s current Punch EV range starts at ₹9.69 lakh ex-showroom for the Smart 30 and extends to ₹12.59 lakh for the Empowered+ S 40. The model is available with 30 kWh and 40 kWh battery options.
The Tiago EV starts considerably lower at ₹6.99 lakh ex-showroom. Tata’s specifications page lists the electric hatchback with 19.2 kWh and 24 kWh battery configurations.
That means the starting Punch EV costs about ₹2.70 lakh more than the starting Tiago EV before registration, insurance and other on-road expenses.
There is also a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option for the new Punch EV. Tata advertises the vehicle from ₹6.49 lakh under this structure, with a separate battery payment starting at ₹2.6 per km. This is not directly comparable with the conventional upfront purchase price because the battery cost is structured separately.
Battery and range: Punch EV has the advantage
The biggest technical difference is battery capacity.
The Tiago EV is offered with 19.2 kWh and 24 kWh battery packs. Its claimed range is 226 km with the smaller pack and 285 km with the larger one, according to specifications reported for the updated 2026 model.
The Punch EV moves considerably higher, with 30 kWh and 40 kWh battery options. Tata says the 30 kWh version has an ARAI-certified range of 365-375 km, while the 40 kWh version is rated at 468 km.
Tata also quotes a real-world C75 range of approximately 355 km for the 40 kWh Punch EV, making the larger-battery version more suitable for buyers who expect to make occasional longer trips rather than using the car exclusively within the city.
Performance and charging
The Punch EV also has the more powerful powertrain. Tata lists 65 kW and 154 Nm for the 30 kWh version and 95 kW with 154 Nm for the 40 kWh model.
The Tiago EV’s two battery versions produce lower outputs. The 19.2 kWh version develops about 61 PS and 110 Nm, while the 24 kWh version produces 75 PS and 114 Nm.
Charging times naturally vary with battery size and charger. Both models support AC and DC charging options, but the Punch EV’s 40 kWh version can use a 65 kW DC charger and is claimed to charge from 20% to 80% in about 26 minutes.
The Tiago EV’s smaller batteries can take less time to charge on AC because there is less energy to replenish. Its 19.2 kWh and 24 kWh versions can also use DC fast charging.
Which Tata EV should you buy?
For buyers whose main priority is the lowest purchase price, the Tiago EV remains the more logical choice. Its starting price is substantially below the Punch EV, and its smaller dimensions can also make it easier to manoeuvre and park in crowded urban areas.
The Punch EV makes a stronger case for buyers who can spend more and want greater range, a larger battery, more performance and SUV-style packaging. The 40 kWh model in particular offers a much larger claimed range than either Tiago EV battery option.
The decision therefore comes down less to which car is universally “better” and more to how the vehicle will be used. A city commuter covering predictable daily distances may find the Tiago EV sufficient and financially easier to justify. Someone looking for one EV that can handle regular urban driving plus occasional intercity travel has a stronger reason to consider the Punch EV.
One important caveat is that ex-showroom prices are not final on-road prices. Registration, insurance, taxes, dealer charges and available offers can change the amount a buyer actually pays. Tata itself notes that prices can change and advises customers to confirm the current price with a dealer.
With the new Punch EV starting closer to the Tiago EV than earlier Punch EV positioning might suggest, Tata’s two electric models now compete more directly for buyers moving into the brand’s EV range. The Tiago EV retains the affordability advantage, while the Punch EV makes the case through range, battery capacity, performance and equipment.
